X-CAR: An Experimental Vehicle Platform for Connected Autonomy Research

Autonomous vehicles promise a future with safer, cleaner, more efficient, and reliable transportation system. However, the current approach to autonomy has focused on building small, disparate intelligences that are closed off rest of world. Vehicle connectivity been proposed as solution, relying vision where mix connected autonomous human-driven populate road. Developed by U.S. Department Transportation Federal Highway Administration reusable, extensible platform for controlling vehicles, CARMA Platform is one technologies enabling this future. Nevertheless, adoption slow, contributing factor being limited, expensive, relatively old vehicle configurations officially supported. To alleviate problem, we propose X-CAR (eXperimental Connected Autonomy Research). By implementing affordable, high quality hardware, aims increase versatility facilitate its research development driving automation.
